Digital: Love and War

10 03 2010

Newly crowned Academy Award for Best Actor winner Jeff Bridges is to relive old memories later this year with the release of Tron Legacy. Surely this will be a ridiculous movie, I am very excited to see it. There are a couple of reasons that I so pumped to see this movie. One: The prequel, Tron, which also featured Bridges, was made in 1982 and has a very 80′s digital look, that I’ve always liked, being a big fan of the film myself. I loved the 80′s and I wish I could have really lived them. Two: Jeff Bridges is the dude, nuff said. Three: Daft Punk are doing the music for it, which is gonna so sick.

According to Disney, this is what we are in store for!

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidante (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous

Another reason that I think will make this movie so good, is the recent introduction of 3-D. I saw Avatar over christmas and really loved the effects. (I liked Avatar, I know there are plenty of people that didn’t, I don’t want to get into this debate) The 3-D combined with the ‘light-cycles’, I think will be visually stunning. If you don’t know what a ‘light cycle’ is, then I suggest you watch Tron, which if you are going to see Legacy would be a good idea anyways. But if you can’t be bothered, then here is a picture of one.

Yeaaaaaah, s’a gonna be awesome.

I’m going to leave you fine people with the trailer. Hope you enjoy it!

Dope Ass Music

9 03 2010

Whats good everybody? Hope you all enjoyed the Song of the Week. If you have any suggestions on what future songs of the week should be, then hit me up. I’m assuming that the only people that read this are people I know personally. If not, well that’s pretty cool.

So without further ado, I’d like to introduce a couple of music gems that i’ve had the pleasure of being hooked up with lately. Now I love music, and I always love it when I find new things, so I thought I would share the wealth with you fine people. If you already know about these, well then you are already ahead of the game, pretty awesome.

Aiight so the first one is actually a podcast. The name of it is Hospital Records Podcast and it is free to subscribe to with iTunes. The podcast is presented by a Drum ‘n’ Bass collective called London Elektricity and it features songs from the Hospital Records label. One artist that I really dig is a guy called Netsky, he brought out a massive tune called “I Refuse”, you should all check it out. Other big names heard on the podcast include DNB giants Danny Byrd and High Contrast. Sets range from around 50 minutes to an hour, just enough to get your DNB fix. It’s a quality podcast, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone that likes Drum ‘n’ Bass. And to make it easier for you guys I’ll post the iTunes URL right below. Enjoy!http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/hospital-records-podcast/id153880765

This next music find I think is off the heezy. Red Bull Music Academy Radio is by far one of the best web radio stations, and it features hundreds of sets, live-recordings and mixes, with more being added daily. All different types of music from hip-hop and rap to drum ‘n’ bass to rock and soft acoustic. For the past couple of weeks I’ve found it to be great as background music if you are working, and equally enjoyable within a party setting. Find a set, stick it on and you don’t have to worry about music for the rest of the night. Recordings feature everything from your very mainstream to underground, so there is definitely something for everybody. Some really sick tunes on here, and I would urge you all to check it out at least.

Ok, well thats it and I hope you enjoy it! Peace.

First Song of the Week ever is Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz – Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)

Stars Behind Bars

8 03 2010

If you follow the hip-hop culture, or even read the news everyday you will know one rapper thats making news, and not about his music. Lyrical genius Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, better know as Lil’Wayne faces a year in prison on charges of criminal possession of a weapon. Now I’m a pretty big Weezy fan, and this news upsets me quite a bit. Not the fact that he’s doing hard time, he’s pretty thug, pretty sure he can handle that. No, what makes me sad is that this will push back his much anticipated album Tha Carter IV. This will most probably not released until his release, sometime in 2011. Shit is whack yo!

So Weezy is trading in his diamonds and chains for…well more chains, not the diamond covered of course, and a prison cell, you got to feel for the guy. Going from being on top of the world, arguably the hottest rapper out there at the moment, and boom he’s gets thrown in jail. Tough shit. However you have to question why he got charged in the first place, and I’m guessing it wasn’t down to that conviction. Let’s take a look at some of Lil’ Wayne’s previous criminal achievements.

  • Numerous charges relating to the possession of marijuana and other drugs.
  • In 2007 he was  arrested in New York for smoking weed by a tour bus at his concert. When taken into custody and searched, Police found a .40 caliber pistol on him.
  • Early 2008 his tour bus was pulled over by border patrolers in the middle of the Arizona dessert. A canine team found 105 grams of bud, 29 grams of blow, 41 grams of MDMA, $22,000 in cash, and his .40 pistol. Chea.
  • Late 2009 he was stopped again by border patrol in Texas, and charged for an unknown amount weed found on tour buses.

So all of that, plus his most recent court appearances, its pretty easy to understand why the authorities got pissed off, and decided he need to spend some time in prison. Let’s just hope that as soon as he gets out, he’s back in the studio.

If you want to read more about this stuff, Rolling Stone just published a issue with a huge article about the whole thing. Just thought I’d leave you with this hilarious picture of him.

Muppets in da House

8 03 2010

Flicking through the TV guide recently, and I stumbled across a classic that I used to frequently watch when I was but a youthful sole. None other than Muppet Treasure Island. This gave me a great idea to relive some of the joyful memories I have, and go through and tell you all about some of my favorite Muppet characters. Now to make this interesting, I going to collectivize all that are considered ‘muppets’. So not just the characters from The Muppet Show, but all of the late Jim Henson’s creations, adding Sesame Street to the roster as well. Aiight lets hit it.

Gonzo

Quite a recognizable character I think. He was always friendly to other muppets, and was very friendly with some other central Muppet characters, such as Kermit and Fozzie. One thing I did always question though: what is he? I mean you look at most other muppet characters, especially other central plot characters and its normally very easy to recognize what they might be, whether it be human or animal. For example we all know Kermit is a frog, Fozzie is a bear and of course we all know that Rizzo, his best friend and roomate is a rat. But what the fuck is Gonzo. I think I remember hearing Kermit describe him in one of the movies as a turkey…do you think that? I’m not convinced, but anyways I think he’s pretty rad.

The Count

I don’t know about you, but I really didn’t like vampires when I as young. To be honest, I don’t really like the whole concept of them now. But I will definitely make an exception for resident math wiz, Count von Count. He always seemed quite devious, yet the kind that is almost lovable. Like you want him to cause mayhem and chaos, and with that stereo-typical Dracula laugh, you would definitely applaud him for it.

Animal

I used to be a HUGE rock fan, and I still am to some extent, although I don’t listen to the genre as much as I probably should these days. Animal definitely gives me the inspiration to put that Zep and The Who back on and just rock out. Possibly inspired by Drummers Keith Moon and John Bonham, Animal represented all that was rock ‘n’ roll back in the day, crazy and out of fucking control. When kids watch this stuff, it all goes over their heads, but you watch the show as an older person, you really come to appreciate how well Henson created these characters, each one representing someone or a group of people out in the real world. Genius. But yes, Animal is awesome.

Swedish Chef

I really don’t get this dude, but I think he’s pretty dope. The one really funny memory of this particular character was when he was making spaghetti, and it kept coming alive and trying to runaway before Chef quickly retrieved it and put it back on the plate. This happens another time before the spaghetti tries to strangle him. Now I thought this was hilarious as a kid. So I decided to hit up youtube and get a vid for all you loyal fans out there. And we are in luck! I will say now that I watched it again, and laughed as hard as I did the first time all those years ago.

Oscar The Grouch

Now I always leave my favorite until last and this time is no exception. I think every kid loved this guy, I know I did (I’m still actually quite a big fan). He lived in a trash can, so I can understand why he was so fucking pissed off all the time. Stereo-typical homeless dude. If any of you guys have seen Dave Chappelle’s stand up regarding Sesame Street, then you will definitely know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, then waste no more time, hit up the net and watch that bad boy because it’s fucking hilarious. So, back to my home boy Oscar. Now although he lived in a trash can, there was much evidence that is was a lot larger than it made out to be. Containing a farm and bowling alley…damn. Although he didn’t directly teach, like the other characters did, he did give the children some great lessons. These included respect and tolerance, and disrespect and intolerance. He showed that even though people have different views and lifestyles, you can still get along great. I really took that lesson to heart, well in someways, perhaps not all. Oscar is definitely my favorite muppet, hands down and no doubt.

Now I know there are plenty of other great Muppets, but these are some of my favorites. Adios Amigos.

Miranda Kerr…thanks!

7 03 2010

GQ really nailed it in their February issue this year. None of this fashion bullshit, how to lose weight by eating rabbit food. They gave men what they really wanted, it is called Gentlemen’s Quarterly after all. So what was it? Well…It comprised of about 9 photos of Miranda Kerr with very little clothing on. So yeah we have all seen the bikini shots before. But I can guarantee you ain’t seen nothing like this from her before. The Australia native, famous for her dipples and the extraordinary girl-next-door look that made the US fall in love with her…has pretty much thrown it all out the window for a sexy senorita black samba look. Personally I’m all for it…I mean once you take a look at these pictures, I think you will thank me. Enjoy.

Sweded

6 03 2010

So “Be Kind Rewind” was on TV recently and I forgot what a great concept ‘sweded movies’ are. So I thought I’d hit you fine people up with a little something something….nahmsayin. So for you jackasses that don’t know what the concept of ‘sweded’ is, I wil tell you. Some dude on urban dictionary provides a great defintion “The summarized recreation of popular pop-culture films using limited budgets and a camcorder. The process is called sweding. Upon completion the film has been Sweded.” The concept provides a highly comical, bordering on hysterical version of such films.

Whilst browsing online I came across a sweded version of the 1986 bromantic classic Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise.

Now I thought it was pretty funny, I don’t know about you guys, but I think it would awesome if more movies were sweded. If you want to hit up some more stuff just search ‘sweded films’ on youtube, or hit up http://www.swededfilm.com/ for some more fun.

Bruisers, Bad-Boys and Brawls

6 03 2010

Whether we admit it or not, everyone likes a fight, especially when it involves sports teams. I’ve been taking a look at some of the most famous incidents that invoked violence of the most brutal kind. Enjoy this.

Eric Cantona’s flying kick in 1995

After being ejected from game Eric Cantona proceeded to the tunnel. Once he reached the touchline, a foolish Crystal Palace left his seat and proceed to shout at Cantona. Some say the man dissed his mother, while others argue it was racially fueled. King Eric then launched a chest high flying kick, and then followed it up by landing several punches to the man before security seperated the pair. With the French international already been given his second red, he left the pitch. He was eventually banned from the league for the rest of the season and subsequently fined £50,000, convicted of assault to which in had to complete 120 hours of community service. What a legend.

Don Zimmer vs Pedro Martinez 2003

32 year old Martinez taking out 72 year old Zimmer after the New York Bench coach charged after the wiry pitcher in Game 3 of the American League Championship.

Malice At The Palace: Pistons-Pacers Brawl 2004

Seconds to go in an ordinary league game between the Pistons and Pacers in the NBA and minor scuffles occurred on court. As the fight was being dealt with, a fan threw a cup of soda at Ron Artest (then a Pacer)  whilst he was laying on the scorers table. Artest then stormed into the crowd, and a brawl ensued, with players and fans brawling alike.

Red Wings-Avalanche Brawl 1997

So I think I’ve saved the best for last. If you haven’t seen this blood bath before, then I really recommend it. I won’t spoil it for you, just watch the video provided!!

I have a dream….To make it in America!

6 03 2010

Aiight…Before How to Make It in America premiered on HBO in the United States on Feb.14 I decided to do a little snooping. So I find out that Boston homeboy Mark ‘Marky Mark’ Wahlberg is producing. Now I think Entourage is a dope show, so I decide to give this a little more of my time. I proceed to find out that Stephen Levinson, Rob Weiss and Julian Farino, all of whom work on the Entourage show, are all part of this project as well. Now if this is anything to go by, I was getting a little excited. Then the bomb dropped: I find out its about two guys ‘trying to make it’. Now this did sound very very familiar. Oh yeah! Isn’t that the plot of Entourage. Needless to say I decided to check out the first couple of episodes. The pilot was provided free on iTunes and Youtube.

So here’s what I got from the first couple of episodes. From the off we are introduced to the main two characters. Ben, played by Bryan Greenberg, is an fashion design school dropout, working for the ‘man’ at Barney’s and whining about his recent break-up with girlfriend Rachel(Lake Bell). Cam, his best friend, played by Victor Rasuk is a more energetic, fun-loving, all or nothing, village idiot type of guy who wastes his time on small time projects such as skateboard decks and bootleg jackets.

We are then introduced to the supporting cast. Kid Cudi makes an appearance as Domingo, Ben and Cam’s obviously cooler, edgey friend that apparently has all the hook-ups. Luiz Guzman stomps in playing Cam’s cousin Rene, ex-con trying to live the legal life in the Energy drink business.

The Last couple of minutes of the pilot expose us to what the show is all about. Ben and Cam give two fingers to the man, and decide to go it alone in the premium denim biz. Stupid? Chea. Although the show is basically a poor-man’s version of Entourage, we are thrown in to the fashion, design and music scene that is New York. I’ve never lived there, so I can’t begin to say whether this is true or not, but it does get me a little excited. Whether or not the characters are good, or even the plot, but it homes in on idea that is important to us all. Making it. Whoever we are, whatever we do, we all want to be someone and to achieve something.

Check out How to Make It in America. Airs Sundays on HBO.
